    Regelmatig bouwen wij Magento import-scripts die databestanden uitlezen en automatisch nieuwe producten aanmaken, reeds bestaande producten updaten of producten uit een webshop verwijderen. Meestal is het wenselijk dat deze productinformatie met eigen informatie kan worden overschreven, dus dat de eigenaar van een webshop zelf bijvoorbeeld beschrijvingen, titels , productafbeeldingen of voorraadinformatie kan instellen. Deze imports draaien echter periodiek - zodat de productinformatie altijd up-to-date is - en het is niet de bedoeling dat de zelf ingevoerde informatie bij de eerst volgende keer dat de import draait verloren gaat.

    De afgelopen dagen liep ik tegen een probleem aan waar ik in eerste instantie Aheadworks' Advanced Newsletter de schuld voor gaf. Ik probeerde Magento custom variabelen te gebruiken in emailtemplates, maar bij het previewen in advanced newsletter kreeg ik een blanke pagina voorgeschoteld en bij het verzenden van testemails ontving ik lege mailtjes.

    Magento beschikt out-of-the-box over een uitgebreide mijn-account overzicht pagina met samenvattingen van de door de bezoeker geplaatste bestellingen, ingevoerde adressen, geplaatste reviews en ratings, nieuwsbrief abonnementen, etc. Het kan echter voor komen dat je deze pagina wilt schrappen, omdat hij niet binnen de scope van het project valt of voor jouw situatie beperkt nut heeft. Het verwijderen van de mijn-account dashboard pagina kun je op de volgende manier doen:

    Iedere pagina in de mijn account sectie van Magento beschikt standaard over de volgende html-structuur;

    {codeblock1}

    Wil je de mijn-account pagina's universeel opmaken, dan gebruik je de referentie .my-account. Maak je echter gebruik van third party modules die een pagina aan de mijn account sectie toevoegen, zoals in ons geval aheadWorks RMA, Sweet ToothPoints & Rewards en aheadWorks Advanced Newsletter zul je tot de ontdekking komen dat deze vaak niet dezelfde html-structuur hanteren. Weg universele opmaak!

    Wow, it has been a few months since we wrote our last blogpost already. Fortunately not without reason, as we have just been very busy! But before I tell you what we've been up to, I would like to say thanks to all the people who have been downloading one of our free Magento modules. It's great to see so many people downloading, experimenting and trying out our software. Also a big thank you for the positive responses and new idea's; you really inspired us.

    Google Analytics is a brilliant tool for tracking visits and learning more about your visitors. However, if you want a quick look at your webshops' stats, logging in to your account is quite some hassle. To make things a little easier for you (and, if you are a webdesigner: to make things a little easier for your customers), we've created Analyticsdash; a simple, integrated overview of your most important stats directly accessible from your Magento admin panel.

    When you've got some experience in Magento, you know it's one page checkout (the default checkout page of Magento) isn't nearly as sexy as the rest. The vertical accordeon initially looked ok, but after three years everyone has learned it's one big jumpy, confusing and bloated interface that just doesn't do the job. Many have fallen for the simple interface of the commercial one step checkout module, but we at H&O always believed the default OPC had some potential underneath its dusty layer of CSS.

    Every designer or programmer knows how it feels: you are excited about an idea and in your rush to create a proof of concept, you get stuck on some stupid mistake - you otherwise would have never made. I recently had the exact same experience when creating our free BodyClassPlus module; my categories just wouldn't show up in my top navigation. To protect myself (and you) from this to ever happen again, I've created a small comic.

    A small, free Magento extension that adds the visitors' browser and platform information as classes to the <body> element of every page. For example: "ie ie7 windows", "firefox windows", "safari mac" etc.

    For one of our recent Magento projects, we wanted to use category images and category thumbnails in our navigation (and display them on our frontpage). When you are reading this, you probably already are aware of the fact that Magento doesn't support this by default. In order to make the category images (or thumbnails) show up in top.phtml, we'll have to do some small adjustments to the Navigation Class. This is what I end up creating:

    We recently completed a webshop where a considerable number of products had over 20 related products. Normally related products in Magento are displayed in a small box on the right side of the page, but in our case it was important that the related products were presented in the same look and feel as products on a 'normal catalog page'. Moving the related products from the right column to the bottom of the 'product-view-page' was not big of a deal, but creating pagination and display the right product count was quite a challenge. You can see a working example here, here or here and this is how we did it:

    Previously, we talked about how to automate your magento import using ssh, no browser needed. Today we will talk about speeding up this import by doing just a small modification. By default Magento's indexes are all set to "Update on Save". If we change this value to "Manual Update" our import will run about twice as fast, but the downside is that we are unable to update certain area's of the website and see the changes made immediately (update categories, remove categories, move categories, add/remove products from categories, update product stocks, etc.).

    For one of our Magento webshops, one of the requirements was that the product feed was imported automatically overnight. This ment that I had to find a way to automate this process, but since Magento doesn't support a non-browser productimport this was easier said then done. After looking for a while, I found the following topic on the magento forums. This looked good, this meant I could use the regular Import/Export profiles and run them in the shell. After investigating a bit further, I discovered I could also use Advanced Import/Export profiles - what was just what I needed. So I set up my Advanced profile (one for importing products, one for importing product relations) and did my first first testrun. Everything went well, but after about 1000 - 2000 products It suddenly crashed: PHP Allowed Memory Size Exchausted Fatal Error. That is just great ...

    In my previous blogpost, I covered how you can create a €1 Bargain page in Magento. To do so, we learned how to create a custom block on wich we applied price as a filter on the product collection and how to create a XML Layout update for a random CMS page. The main advantage of this method for creating custom catalog pages in Magento is that the toolbar, pagination, navigation layered, caches & indexes all continue to function correctly. In this post, I want to show you how you can use this same method to display all products with a special price on the frontpage of your Magento webshop

    At some of our Magento projects we were required to create custom pages that contained a large collection of products that meet specific requirements. An example? The € 2, - gadgets page at www.chinese-gadgets.nl/2-euro-gadgets. Because the promotion 'Catalog Price Rules' slow down Magento extremely - and in addition to that would be just a workaround. We have solved this problem by creating a custom block on which we apply our filters directly to the productCollection and calling this block through a simple Layout XML Update on a CMS page.
